Summer

Imagine never having to turn on an air conditioner, but basking in the heat of the sun to your heart's content, or on every break from the office you can find, whichever applies.  Wouldn't that be heaven?  Well it is.  Aren't we lucky?  This is what makes winter in the San Juans worth navigating.  Balmy days, cool refreshing nights.

Summer in the San Juans, you just can't do better.  The streets are full of visitors, the fourth of July parade is already a thing of the past, days fly by when life is so good.  July's heat is the middle of the warm season, punctuated this year by thunderstorms to beat the band.  Like a second round of fireworks, quite the excitement.

Still to come is the County Fair.  I was so impressed to find the year I got here people telling me how everyone has an entry in the fair.  What a wonderful expression of community involvement I thought.  After a bit of experience, I find entry to the fair comes at a reduced price of admission, ah, the ever resourceful working people of the islands, always finding a way to have fun and still make the rent or the house payment.

It seems it's even a bit of a sport to find a way through the gates with as little cash out of pocket as possible. I discovered that the year I manned the fair gate booth.  Really people, did you think I didn't notice?  This year I look forward to strolling through the exhibits, enjoying the food court and the live music into the night, linked arm in arm with my sweetheart, so long awaited, never to go unappreciated, hard won is such a thing on an island of only 7,000 souls to choose from, many of them too young, too old, or too whatever.
